Wolfe's announcement that he would no longer be writing horror novels hadn't slowed down all of his fans....the most die-hard among them still broke their collective piggy-banks for occasional pilgrimages to their chosen mecca of horror to validate their own bubble of denial.

Title: Boo, Rats!
Characters: Boo and other residents of Skary
Wordcount: 16,371 in 12 chapters
Summary: Based on Rene Gutteridge's humorous "Boo" series, set in the small town of Skary, Indiana between the events of her Boo and Boo Who novels. Former horror writer Wolfe "Boo" Boone, eccentric inhabitants and visitors engage in a comedy of errors.

A/N: According to [livejournal.com profile] everloyal, no knowledge is needed of the books this is based on in order to enjoy it - she told me to add this disclaimer. ;-)

This is not only a turn at a classic comedy of errors but also a fun poke at obsessed fans who follow the famous horror writer they admire in that weird quasi-stalker way only fans understand. A hat tip is needed, I think, to Northanger Abbey as well, where the imagination makes events seem other than they are.

Rene Gutteridge writes light, readable Christian fiction and while some of her characters are slightly too Mary-Sue for my liking (well, Martha Stewart might be a closer approximation) I found my imagination and humor tickled by the protagonist of this series, Boo. This is a VERY obscure fandom apparently as literally almost no one has read it and it stands as my sole work with absolutely NO feedback. Ever. Oh well - I did get a nice note from the author, however!

I like to think it would make a good read even to someone who has not read the books (Boo, Boo Who and Boo Hiss, for those wondering) and the style it is written in mimics the author's.

In "Boo Rats" it is approximately the third week of December, placing it just post-engagement to Ainsley for the protagonist (former famous horror-writer Wolfe Boone - sort of a Stephen King character who is trying to switch genres) but before the craziness of Christmas Eve that transpires in the second novel. I admit there wasn't a lot of room for a gap-filling tale here, so I had to give Alfred (his agent) an extra trip on a plane, but with the "Boo" reference to "several book-signings" that were looming in December, it seemed not outside the plausibility that he might do this, especially in the world of this rather odd town and its inhabitants.

The event concerning the rat is based on something that really happened in our own home, complete with the reaction of our (only two) cats and the general manner of its being finally resolved. One small liberty I have taken is allowing the affectionate nickname of "Boo" to move slightly beyond the bounds of the townfolk themselves so that it could be used by those who are not from Skary, but who may have heard of it from other admirers.
